Organic Flor de Sal flakes from Portugal, 0.5–2 mm

Product information "Organic Flor de Sal flakes from Portugal, 0.5–2 mm"

Product description

Organic Flor de Sal from Portugal is a natural sea salt that comes as delicate white flakes with a grain size of around 0.5–2.0 mm. Its light, flaky texture is similar to classic fleur de sel and is ideal for a finely tuned, Mediterranean-style kitchen.

At Biova, this flake salt is carefully harvested by hand and processed without refining or additives, so the original crystal structure and mineral diversity are preserved as far as possible. The defined flake size, classified as granulated / crushed / coarse, ensures consistent quality, making it particularly attractive as bulk salt for foodservice, artisan producers and resellers.

In the kitchen, organic Flor de Sal is mainly used as a finishing salt to subtly round off dishes just before serving. Its mild salinity and easily crumbled flakes make this sea salt highly versatile – from grilled vegetables and fish to custom spice and herb salt blends with Biova sea salt.

Origin

This sea salt comes from southern Portugal, where clean Atlantic water, abundant sunshine and steady winds create ideal conditions for premium fleur de sel. Traditional salt pans in protected coastal areas produce a clear, white flake salt with consistent quality.

Cultivation / production / harvest

Atlantic water collects in shallow salt pans and slowly evaporates under the sun. On warm days, fine salt flowers form on the surface; experienced salt workers skim them off by hand, and Biova then air-dries them gently.

Special features

Typical are the soft, flaky crystals with a grain size of around 0.5–2.0 mm, classified as flake salt, granulated / crushed / coarse. This white sea salt is unrefined, free from additives and provides a versatile base for quality-focused Mediterranean cuisine and professional seasoning salt blends.

Differences in origin and processing

Unlike industrially refined table salt, this Portuguese sea salt retains its original crystal structure in full. Manual harvesting and slow drying create a loose, flaky texture that clearly sets it apart from boiled or heavily processed salts – a characteristic Biova deliberately preserves.

Taste & aroma

On the palate, this flake salt is mildly salty with a fine, non-dominant savouriness. The flakes dissolve slowly on the tongue, support the natural flavours of vegetables, fish, meat and cold dishes, and remain subtly neutral on the nose.

Suggested uses

  • As a finishing salt for sprinkling over grilled vegetables, fish and meat just before serving
  • To enhance salads, carpaccio, bruschetta and other Mediterranean starters
  • As a base for custom spice and herb salt blends in professional and home kitchens or artisan production
